ARQUIMEA develops off-the-shelf and custom actuators and mechanisms based on Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). We are the leading European supplier of SMA-based actuators, including our family of non-explosive field-resettable Hold-Down & Release Mechanisms (HDRM) known as REACT.

SMA are alloys that “remember” their original shape and that when deformed return to the pre-deformed shape when heated. SMA are a lightweight, solid-state alternative to conventional actuators such as hydraulic, pneumatic and motor-based systems. They are commonly used in all kinds of industries, such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical or robotics.

We use our proprietary high-temperature SMA called SMARQ to design actuators and mechanisms suitable for operation between -125 and +125ºC.

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are alloys that “remember” their original shape that can be deformed and subsequently revert to their pre-deformed shape when heated. SMAs are a lightweight, solid-state alternative to conventional actuators such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and motor-based systems. They are commonly used in all kinds industries, such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical and robotics.

We are the sole provider of the high-temperature SMA called SMARQ, which we use in our actuators and allowing for an operational temperature range of between -125 and +125ºC.

HDRM-REACT

REACT devices are low-shock Hold-Down & Release Actuators whose function is to firmly fix a payload during transportation or launch and later release it by electrical activation.

Pin Pullers

Pin Pullers are linear actuators in which a pin or piston initially remains firmly locked in extended position and, when activated, retracts inside a mechanical structure, usually against a side load.

Gimbal

ARQUIMEA’s Gimbal powered by Phi Drive motor devices is a two-axes positioner which function is to direct precisely a load. The gimbal is formed by two motors driven by piezoelectric stacks with electric redundancy. The gimbal includes two degrees of freedom: the rotation in roll and yaw axes.

Deployment Mechanism

ARQUIMEA’s deployment mechanisms are used together with our HDRMs for release and deployment of several space systems and instruments, such as solar panels, antennas, scientific instruments or cover doors. We use hinge-and spring-based devices with deployment detection features.

Valves

ARQUIMEA is engaged with the European Space Agency in the development and qualification of an SMA-based valve for propulsion passivation of the propellant tanks at the satellite end of life.
